I joined a life drawing session in Amsterdam, at 4Bid Gallery, where fast poses, charcoal, and a sense of freedom brought back movement, focus, and artistic breathing space.
Entering the space
Life drawing at 4Bid Gallery, Amsterdam
Last Sunday afternoon, I stepped into a space that immediately felt familiar! Through MeetUp and the RISD alumni group, I found my way to a life drawing session at 4Bid Gallery in Amsterdam. A place where different backgrounds come together, yet the focus is instantly clear: to observe, respond, and work.
A natural start
My dear friend Valery, who graduated from RISD, connected me with this group. The welcome was open and natural. No threshold, no need for explanation, just take a seat and begin. Exactly what suits me.
Drawing from the model
It had been a long time since I last drew from a live model. Precisely because of that, it felt sharp. The model, Lou, worked very professionally. The poses were clear, built in a strong rhythm, with a pace that forces you to make decisions. Observe, translate, continue.

Energy and freedom
What made this session specific for me was the combination of energy and freedom. No teacher in the room. No correction. Just the model, the time, and the material. The speed of the poses brought a directness I had been looking for. Less thinking, more responding. And above all, just doing. Without someone watching over your shoulder to see if it’s “right.”

Charcoal and movement
I worked in charcoal on A3. The focus naturally shifted toward dynamics and contrast. Dark against light, quick lines defining the posture. Not about perfecting, but moving with what emerges.

Rhythm and space
There is something in that rhythm, short poses, repetition, shifting, that opens space. Artistic breathing space. A way of working that asks for less control and more presence with what you are doing. I have mentioned it before; letting go of control gives me a lot. (and yet I tend to forget that again and again.)

What this afternoon gave
This afternoon gave exactly what is needed right now: movement, clarity, and the freedom not to fix the image, but to let it come into being. A bit like how I want to live as well.
