Artist note — Leonoor Ruigrok

There is something magical about old sketches. They are a snapshot of an idea, an inspiration captured at that moment in time. These old sketches were not perfect, but it was precisely that imperfection that gave them a certain power. They told stories that I might not have fully understood back then, but now, years later, they come to life.

Old sketches from Leonoor (LACE) Ruigrok where a inspiration for new painting and art series.

Art explanation of Leonoor Ruigrok

Symbolic colourful oil painting by LACE Ruig. Magical expressive realism
Oil painting by Leonoor (LACE) Ruigrok – There is a magical realism link with my works.

During a somewhat uncertain moment in my art studio, I spontaneously grabbed my old sketchbook. With these sketches in hand, I began my creative process. I used them as a starting point for my new oil paintings. Each sketch served as a blueprint, but the final paintings developed in their own unique way. It was a fascinating project, combining elements from the original sketches with new techniques and insights I have gained over the years.

The new works

The resulting oil paintings are a tribute to those old sketches. They are a fusion of past and present, combining the spontaneous energy of the sketches with the depth and richness of oil paint. Each painting has its own unique atmosphere, yet they all bear the mark of their origin.

This project has made me realize how valuable my old sketchbooks are. They are not only an archive of ideas but a constant source of inspiration. By looking back at my earlier work, I have found new ways to express my artistic vision.

These old sketches were not perfect, but it was precisely that imperfection that gave them a certain power.
