GESTURE AND TRANSLATION

Looking at shapes and contrast is where the drawing begins, but it never ends there.
What I see moves through my hand and shifts into something that carries my own rhythm and pressure. The image becomes a translation rather than a reproduction.

WORKING WITH CHARCOAL

Charcoal allows direct contact with the surface.
It can be soft, dusty, sharp or dense, depending on how it is handled. Because of that, it responds immediately to movement, making it possible to move freely between control and release.

HKU – UTRECHT PERIOD

These drawings originate from my time at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU).
During this period, the focus was strongly on concept development, where observing, analysing and questioning were as important as making. Within that context, charcoal became a tool to explore how an image forms before it becomes fixed.

THE SMALL IN THE IMAGE

Within the larger landscape, small shifts in tone and gesture carry the tension.
It is in these subtle movements that the drawing holds its energy.
