Landscape charcoal drawing
Working with charcoal allows me to move directly between observation and interpretation. The image is never copied, but translated, shaped by gesture, pressure and rhythm. In that space, the material becomes an active partner, responding to what I see and how I move.
HKU Period
These drawings originate from my time at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), during my studies at the academy. This period was strongly focused on concept development, where thinking, observing and questioning were as essential as making. Within that context, these charcoal works became a way to explore how an image can carry both structure and intuition, long before it settles into a fixed form.

Looking at the shapes and contrast of the image, I make a translation with my personal touch. I love letting the material speak and collaborating with my own strength and fluidity. With charcoal (in various forms), I can freely express what I see.
