LACE Ruig artist interview on Podium Bollenstreek — TV still

A brief anthology about my artwork. My sources, my dark side & alter egos.

MY WORK, UNPACKED — INSPIRATIONS, SHADOWS & ALTER EGOS

Nov 30, 2024 — TV: Podium Bollenstreek (Omroep Bo)

Last night I was a guest at Podium Bollenstreek (with Nick Duindam). We talk about the threads running through my work: memories from the dunes, symbols that keep returning, the soft next to the raw. A brief anthology, yes—but with shadows and alter egos in the room.

What we cover

  • Inspirations: land and light, old-Dutch craft when needed, a mark that refuses to behave.
  • Symbols: a house in big weather, a figure that carries unnamed feelings.
  • Shadows & alter egos: the edges I don’t always show, yet live in the work.

It became a warm, generous interview thanks to the crew and interviewer. We speak Dutch; unfortunately there are no subtitles yet.
Watch the episode here.

I love the making—layer by layer—and yes, talking about it is fun too.

Curious to drop by my studio in Voorhout, interested in one of my works, or thinking about a potential collaboration? I’d be glad to hear from you.
I enjoy working with curators, galleries, designers, architects, interior creatives, and brands.

What inspires the paintings of LACE Ruig?

What I see, what I feel and the stories I carry. In connection with the world around me. Symbols return (a house in a raw landscape, the hare, the deer). I work layer by layer with oil & mixed media, with a mix of magical realism and the expressive.

What do “shadows & alter egos” mean in her work?

Shadows are the darker edges of a story, grief, doubt, strength under the skin. Not for effect, but as the backbone of the painting. Alter egos appear as figures or animals (such as the hare, deer and house): symbols that allow tenderness to exist alongside strength.

Where can I see the works in person?

In my studio (by appointment) and at selected exhibitions. Start with the Portfolio, check Exhibitions & Press for current shows, or book a studio visit to experience the work up close.
