In the studio – work in progress

My painting process does not always begin with a fixed image or predetermined outcome. In the studio, I return to the same canvas again and again, responding to what has appeared through layers, gesture and material.

What Intuitive Painting Means To Me

For me, intuitive painting is about responding while I work. I may have a direction in mind, but I do not want to decide everything beforehand. Material, movement and what has already appeared on the surface can change where the painting goes next.

A physical form of intuition

In this way of working, intuition is not something abstract, but something physical. It lives in the gesture, in the rhythm of applying and removing paint, in the moment of continuing or stopping. Each layer carries traces of what came before, even when parts of it are later covered again.

A dialogue with the image

For me, this means entering into a dialogue with the painting. I look, work, step back and return again. What is happening? Where does it resist? What does the image ask for, and what do I bring into it? Within that exchange, the direction can change while I am working.

Letting the image emerge

Sometimes I know quite quickly where a painting is going. At other times I have to leave it alone and return later. Not knowing what comes next has become part of the process too.

Working in layers and movement

There’s a quiet buzz in my studio. Most evenings, I find myself working on several pieces at once. Right now, I’m creating a new oil painting, layer by layer, each night returning to see: what has emerged today?

From process to image — Red Home

Red Home developed gradually, through layers, changes and decisions made while I was working. A small structure holding its ground within a larger movement of paint and gesture.
