November. An island in the lull. There the wind sweeps over seashells and art lingers in the dunes. Kunstmaand Ameland is one of those moments in the year when time slows down and space opens up. Although I’m not part of it this year, I still feel connected.

Where your eyes learn to see again

Artist Lace Ruig wandering about Kunstmaand Ameland

Nature is not only something you visit, but something that touches you.

Colorful mixed media drawing by Lace Ruig. Title" sneaky hidden funflowers. A secret hidden field sunflowers at the Orta Lake in Italy.

Connected to the idea that art belongs in places where your breath deepens. Where your eyes learn to see again. Where nature isn’t visited, but experienced, intimately, quietly, deeply. These are also the places where my work comes to life.

An island is a world unto itself. Its boundaries are soft, water, sand, wind, yet clearly felt. Those who travel to a place like Ameland in November are not seeking crowds, but depth. And there, precisely there, space arises for a different way of seeing.

Not just art, but also yourself.

I recognize that stillness. Not on a Wadden island this time, but in the rugged plains of Iceland. In the quiet valleys of Northern Italy. Or in my studio, where the daylight writes its own story across canvas and skin.

What art does when the world briefly falls silent

In my work I search for those moments when everything seems to slow down. Where color doesn’t shout, but breathes. Sometimes, symbols surface like shells after the tide , unexpected, yet full of meaning

My paintings don’t arise from plans or concepts. They reveal themselves, just like clouds can roll in across an empty beach. I work in layers, with light, with rhythms that resist language. But sometimes… I allow myself to be caught. By a sunflower field in an Italian valley. By a house that stands firm in a storm. By stillness that speaks.

Connecting Kunstmaand

Although my work is not physically present at Kunstmaand Ameland this year, I still feel part of the same quest: for depth, for meaning, for art that doesn’t explain but invites.

art studio visit

Perhaps you’re reading this just after stepping off the ferry. Perhaps you’re at home, reflecting on art in the wind.

Either way: you’re welcome to step into my world as well. Moreover, we love to give you a sneak preview of my art process and show you both early and new works. My studio is located in Voorhout, The Netherlands, right in the heart of the Bollenstreek and its flower fields. It’s also a wonderful place for wandering and quiet reflection.

those who wish to see beyond

For artists and art lovers inspired by nature, silence, and symbolism, Northern Italy, especially the region around Lake Orta, offers, like Ameland, a unique source of sensory richness. Thanks to its subtropical climate, high humidity, and ever-changing light, the landscape is constantly in motion.

These are the places where my paintings are born. Not planned. But found.
