Seeing my work through someone else’s eyes

A different perspective

Sometimes someone else sees something in my work that you haven’t quite put into words for myself. My dear friend Karin Melis has followed my paintings over the years, occasionally choosing one to accompany a short story she has written. Often, by the time she chooses a painting, I’m still working on it.

She recently wrote a personal reflection on this process, on the layers, the colours and the changes that happen along the way. I wanted to share her words here.

Leonoor’s Long and Winding Road Towards Being

A personal reflection by Karin Melis

“Sometimes when I ask Leonoor if I may pick one of her pieces of art to illustrate a short story I have written — and she always says ‘yes’, Leonoor is a generous friend – she invarabily would comment on my choice ‘but I am still working on it’. I persist on the version I have seen and which I already have downloaded. Then again, I would subsequently follow Leonoor’s winding road in becoming into being. Meanwhile my ‘original’ is glorifying along my short story. It’s not that radical changes come into being, it is more that Leonoor explores the depth of her artistic gaze, reaching deeper and deeper, putting layer on layer while paradoxically working on transparancy; looking through. Leonoor’s work is incredible colourful. I recognize her work, her
signature in one eyeshot. It’s an honour to follow my friend step by step on her
everlasting winding road.”
